In My Kitchen ~ June 2014

Another month has gone by which means another In My Kitchen post!  Please have a look at what I have to share with you and then head over to Fig Lime and Cordial to see the rest of the In My Kitchen posts from around the world.

June is birthday month here at LSL and though it is only my second birthday year here in Australia, I still struggle a little as it is winter here and for more than three decades my birthday has always been in summer.  No worries though.  I’m hoping that Perth gives me a very mild and sunny winter’s day.  In any case, I’m hoping to have a couple “birthday” kitchen things to show you next month!

This month, however, I have In My Kitchen, this beautiful head of lettuce.  It was given to us by friends who grow using aquaponics (a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics).  Isn’t it beautiful?  And it was so delicious.  I enjoyed it with cherry tomatoes and avocado topped off with balsamic vinaigrette.  Really lovely.In My Kitchen ~ Living the Savory Life

Also In My Kitchen are these two new books I picked up at Books for Cooks in Melbourne.  I’m so excited to dive into them.  And Books for Cooks in Fitzroy?  Such an awesome shop.  I really recommend if you’re in the area and you’re into cooking you head on in.  It is a small shop but you can really get lost in there for hours.  They have such a beautiful selection.  I can’t wait to go back again!  There were thousands of other books I want to buy.  Are you like me?  Do you love collecting cookbooks and other books about food?In My Kitchen ~ Living the Savory Life

Lastly, In My Kitchen, is hot apple crisp made in one of my favorite Le Creuset baking dishes.  It is winter here and the weather warrants it.  Made with granny smith apples and sugar only in the crumble topping this dessert is tart with just a little bit of sweet and is so pretty baked up in my red dish.  I have a small collection of Le Creuset and they are all red.  Maybe in the coming months I’ll share more of my pieces with you.  It is winter and my Lamb Ragu cooks up beautifully in my oval casserole.In My Kitchen ~ Living the Savory Life

    I love it when the lettuce is the main ingredient of the salad. I make a dressing with olive oil, lime juice, and red onions and toss it through the rocket that is growing in my garden… its my favourite! i am also jealous of your small collection of Le Creuset as I am saving up at the moment for a casserole dish and this will be my first piece! Thanks for sharing!

      When it is such beautiful lettuce it is really a crime to not make it the star of the show!! You’ll love having a Le Creuset. Such a great piece to have in your kitchen.

    I’ve never had apple crisp but it looks delicious! Is it like apple crumble?
    I’m a big fan of Le Creuset but am not yet an owner of any! I’m afraid our kitchen is already full! I hope that when some of our pots get old we’ll get some though 🙂

    It was wonderful to discover your blog! I just cannot imagine June being summer….although I suppose in the Northern Hemisphere summer wouldn’t be as hot as our summers 🙂

      Apple crumble and apple crisp are exactly the same! I hope to share the recipe soon. Most of the US doesn’t get as hot as Oz but places Las Vegas and Phoenix do!

    I’ve just celebrated my birthday and yes, I haven’t yet experienced a warm one! I’ve always wanted to have a birthday in the Northern Hemisphere just once in my life! My Le Crueset dishes are used ALL THE TIME! xx

      Oh you should!! Hawaii isn’t too far and is a great place to visit. I think Hawaiian Airlines does a Syd to Honolulu direct now.

    My birthday is in January and I’m from Maine so you can imagine the difference having my birthday in summer was after moving to Australia. I do understand. 🙂 I could live on apple crisp and your dish is beautiful.

      Oh you got the opposite!! Lucky you! Still weird to have Christmas in summer though. Isn’t it? Not sure I’ll ever get used to that!

    Hi Lauren-loved reading your post and hoping Perth at least gives you some sunshine for your upcoming birthday! That lettuce looks so delicate and fresh. I love reading and collecting cookbooks. Im actually getting more strict with selecting them though as Im running out of space. I love a book where I just want to cook everything inside. And Im also a big fan of Le Cruset too- I have two saucepans and they are absolute kitvhen favourites x Thank you for sharing your kitchen xx

    I’ve spent hours in Books for Cooks recently too, it a little gem! I’m also a Le Creuset fan. A couple of years ago I got lucky and picked a brand new lidded casserole up in an op shop for $45. Ikea has excellent look-a- like cast iron at 1/6th the price….happy birthday….

    I am ever so slightly obsessed with cookbooks. I have a *very* large wish list I am working through. I have just cleaned out my bookshelves so I have lots of room for new ones now 🙂
    I adore Le Creuset, but mine are all in blue. I don’t have any of the baking trays so have been eyeing off that one for awhile. Nobody seems to be getting my not too subtle hints that I keep dropping around birthdays/Christmas though.

    it’s funny but i am just not a lettuce leaf kind of girl. my sister is the same and we disdainfully spit out the “rabbit food” in cafes. my birthday is in june so i am used to a winter birthday but one year we were in europe so i had a summer one down a cave in slovenia!
