Leftover Revamp ~ Hawaiian Burger

Hawaiian Burger ~ Living the Savory LifeI hadn’t initially intended on sharing this with you but it was just too delicious not to.  As you know, part of my new commitment to our kitchen is to use up leftover bits and pieces in the refrigerator and pantry and not be wasteful.  Well, it was lunchtime and instead of running out to pick up lunch supplies I pulled a couple burger patties out of the freezer, some fresh pineapple leftover from my pineapple salsa, the last few slices of triple smoke deli ham, some jalapenos,  and a bit of red onion.   The one thing I did grab, was the burger buns from our favorite bakery around the corner.  They have the nicest bread and croissants.  Total bonus that they’re cheaper than buying bread from the grocery store and it tastes so much better!

This burger came together very quickly.  I started by preheating a large pan over medium high heat.  I salted and peppered the first side of the patties.  When the pan was hot a small amount of oil went into the pan and then the burgers; seasoned size down.  I then seasoned the other side with salt and pepper.  Timer on for two minutes.  While that was happening I sliced and cored a few slices of pineapple and red onion.Hawaiian Burger ~ Living the Savory Life

When the timer went off I flipped the burgers over for another couple of minutes (cooking time will depend on how you like your burgers done and how big they are).  While the burgers were finishing cooking I pushed them to one side and added the pineapple to the pan, sliced the buns in half and spread a little bit of mayo on each side of the bun.

When the second timer went off I took the burgers out of the pan, flipped the pineapple over and put the ham slices in the pan to heat through.  Then it was time to stack the burger.  Burger patty first and then the ham slices.  Next I stacked the pineapple slices, red onion and finally topped with jalapeno slices.Hawaiian Burger ~ Living the Savory Life

So delicious.  Juicy burger patty, smokey ham, sweet pineapple, a bit of bite from the raw onion, heat from the jalapenos, creaminess from the mayo and finally the soft yet crusty bun to hold it all together.  The Hawaiian Burger was a great idea!  And I’m so glad I decided to practice my photography and snapped some photos.  Otherwise I would have never been able to share with you just how good this was!!  I hope you try it and enjoy it as much as we did!

Just a brief side note: when we have burgers at home we only use half the package of ground beef so I always prep a couple extra patties and throw them in the freezer for an easy meal.  I put a square of baking or wax paper in between each of the patties prior to freezing.  That way, if I only want to take one patty out it is easy to pop them apart.  I then mark the package with how many are in there and the date I put them in the freezer.  Having the date on the freezer packages definitely helps me choose what needs to be used up.  I try not to leave anything in there for too long.
